BACK TO SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE
Burnside Neighborhood Association, Inc., Share and Learn, Back-to-School Drive prepares hundreds of students for their first day of school by supplying them with pencils, rulers, scissors, filler paper, spiral notebooks, crayons, 3 ring binders, backpacks, pocket folders, highlighters, glue sticks, school boxes, uniforms, and colored pencils.
The drive provides a great opportunity for many to give back to the community and help students whose parents may otherwise not be able to afford these supplies. It is also a great opportunity to work in partnership with the Burnside Neighborhood Association, who sponsors the entire event. You can make a huge impact with just a small donation. All donation are tax-deductible. We collect supplies and donations throughout the year, you can drop-off the supplies or we will be happy to pick them up. In addition, we also except cash donations.
We are all individuals working together, with different talents, and different destination. However, one thing we all have in common is the power to give and make a difference in the life of a child's who is less fortunate.
THE STREET CORNER INTERVENTION AND PREVENTION PROGRAM (SCIPP)
One of the greatest concerns of the Burnside Neighborhood Association staff is the prevnetion of crime in the community. Precisely because our penal system fails in its attempt to rehabilitate those who have been convicted of offenses, we must be concerned with keeping our youth from committing crimes in the first place.
The primary purpose of SCIPP is to try to reach troubled youth who show signs of antisocial behavior and offer them help before their problem manifest themselves in criminal act. The program encourages youth who are contiplating dropping-out of school, to finish high school and attend a post secondary institution. Which will provide them with the opportunity to acquire an education and therefore earn a salary on a job, not on the street.
The program also encourages youth not to get involved in drugs and gangs. Youth are referred to various programs throughout the City of Chicago. Programs that provide support, counseling, child care, job training and other programs provide them with intensive treatment to reverse the social process, and then teach him adaptive behavior.
